- Why would Elie Wiesel want to return to Auschwitz, the place of much of his sorrow? Why is he willing to share his deepest thoughts with Oprah and broadcast them before millions of others? How does this interview help others to remember, to want to promote change?

Elie may want to return to Auschwitz, not to cause himself pain but to honor those that died there. To remember. The reason he shares about his experience with Oprah and the world is to remind everyone that the Holocost happened and that instead of denying it we need to accept it and prevent future events similar to the Holocost. The pain in Elie is evident in his interview. The detail he remembers shows the depth of the impact his experiences left on him. It helps us realize the problem with just standing by and watching.
ReplyDeleteHonoring those who died there is a good answer to this question. I didn't know why someone would want to relive something so horrible, but he probably wanted to go back and pay his respects. I also agree with you that he is sharing his experiences to prevent events like the Holocaust from happening in in the future.
DeleteYour take on Elie's wanting to return to Auschwitz is interesting. I agree that honoring the people who died there is a good explanation for the reason of Elie's return.
DeleteI really don't know why Elie Wiesel would want to revisit Auschwitz. That was the place that he lost his mother and sisters, his God, and almost died. Why would someone want to go back to a place that would trigger so much pain? Maybe he wanted to see how it had changed, but in the interview he says that he can still feel how many people died on those grounds. I think that he talked about his Holocaust experience to share a message with the world. He wanted to tell people about those horrific experiences that left a mark on him so that history will never repeat itself.
ReplyDeleteI believe the reason for Elie returning to Auschwitz is to remind himself of all that happened there. Whenever a person experiences a hard or traumatic experience they avoid going to the place where the experience occurred. This is because they are partially in denial, cannot cope, and have a large weight on their shoulders. Once they have returned to the place where the horrible experience happened they gain acceptance, peace, and closure. I believe Elie Wiesel was also trying to gain closure. The reason for him sharing his experience with Oprah and the rest of the world is to act like a messenger. He is trying to dissuade something like the Holocaust to ever happen again. He's hoping that the pain he cannot hide will become known as a indicator and a sort of look into the past to the people who had not experienced the Holocaust to know how truly horrendous it was.

DeleteI agree that Wiesel is talking about his Holocaust experience so that something like that will never happen again. I think that was in an article that we read where Wiesel said that he wanted to make history remember what happened. I see what you're saying about him wanting to get closure, but I don't think that visiting Auschwitz would be a coping strategy.
ReplyDeleteI wasn't saying that Wiesel was using Auschwitz as a coping strategy. I was providing some reasons why people would go Back to the place a traumatic experience occurred and not Elie Wiesel specifically.
DeleteI believe Elie wanted to truly make others aware of the Holocaust as people in this generation a few prior generations often learn about the Holocaust yet they never truly get the full impact of it. Sometimes, for others to truly understand the severity and weight of a tragedy such as the Holocaust, they need someone to appeal to their emotions, as people tend to be emotional beings. I believe that the short hour or so Elie spent back in the camp and opening up to Oprah has given millions of people something they can never learn from the text books and that is the feeling of true sorrow. With millions of viewers watching Elie's interview and truly understanding its impact, humanity has a greater chance of never repeating the same mistake it did during the Holocaust.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the reason Ellie Wiesel would want to return to Auschwitz because it is the place that changed his whole life. It was the place that made him.The place that made him, a boy who was once very religious, question his faith in God. In Auschwitz he went from a boy to a man. There he had to grow up quick. He could act his age. He had to suck things up and deal with them. It is the place that made him who he is. He shared his deepest thoughts with Oprah and the rest of the world because back then nobody listened. Nobody cared. Everyone was too stuck on themselves to hear about stories of others. The interview help other remember the pain and loss people of the Holocaust had to go through. It helps people was to prevent something like this again to happen.
ReplyDeleteElie didn't want to go back to Auschwitz, but he knew that he had a responsibility to go. Him going back, while painful for him, lead to a grater understanding of the camps and the horrors committed there. He revels his deepest, darkest secrets to everyone so they can learn, learn what happened there, and how to stop it if it happens again. If we forget the Holocaust, it will happen again, so we need to learn from our mistakes, and listen to his story.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your response the only thing I don't like personally is that is very short. I think that you need to add a little bit more
DeleteI believe that Elie Wiesel wanted to return to Auschwitz to respect and honor all of those who didn't make it and also were put through more torture than he was. This place held so much sorrow but it changed him as a person and was a part of his life story. He was willing to broadcast his deepest thoughts before millions of others because this is a part of history and he speaks for the ones unable to speak. This interview helps others to promote change because all it took was one person, to believe a certain way, then to persuade others of feeling the same and trying to kill all Jews. People can learn how to treat others and speak up for those who can't.
ReplyDeleteI agree with most of your answer expect the first part because if Elie didn't want to talk about his experience in the holocaust I don't think he would want to go back to where most of his pain was.
DeleteIf Elie didn't want to talk about the holocaust. I don't think he wanted to go back to Auschwitz because so many horrible thing happened to him there. I think that Elie realized that if he didn't tell what happened to him something like the holocaust might happen again and he didn't want that to happen again. I think that when people heard of all the horrors of the holocaust they realized how bad it was. I think that people have more respect for all the Holocaust survivors when Elie told his story. This helps everyone remember what happen and that we should never let something like that happen again.
